To be Successful You Have to Have a Blog... Right? Wrong!

Here's a good article by Marcia Yudkin about blogging. But not the standard "how to" blog type article.

Can you be successful without blogging?

"A prominent blogger recently argued the negative: "Myself personally, I don’t know of a single successful freelancer who does not have a blog, period."

Yudkin counters that she's been a successful freelance writer, speaker and consultant for nearly 30 years, and does not have a blog. "I have good reasons for not blogging, and maybe you do, also.

Making Billboards Work by Dr. Nunley

Billboard advertising works best when combined with other marketing strategies, so says Kevin Nunley, aka Dr. Nunley.

"For the most part billboards are used as reminder advertising, but sometimes they can lead directly to sales. For example, when you put "next exit" or "2 miles ahead" on your billboard, your sales could increase dramatically.

"Most of the time, you can't buy just one billboard. Usually you've got to rent ten to twenty billboards at once. Some will be in good locations, while others are definite losers.

"To decide whether or not it would be profitable for you to have a billboard, find out how many cars pass the billboard site each day. Billboard firms have this data on hand. Billboard advertising is best if you have a business that will have an instant appeal to motorists.

"When planning your billboard, try not to use more than six words. Remember that people are driving quickly by and only have time to glance at your sign. Keep it simple. Use one large graphic for the focus, and make sure that the type is clear and the words are large.

"Try testing a billboard for a month or two. If nothing happens, at least you're not out of that much money."

The Book: "The Secret: What Great Leaders Know - And Do"

In the book "The Secret: What Great Leaders Know - And Do" by Ken Blanchard, Debbie, a struggling leader finds herself about to lose her job due to poor performance. In a desperate attempt to save her career, she enrolls in a new mentoring program offered by her company. Much to her surprise, Debbie finds her mentor is the president of the company (Jeff Brown).

Debbie decides that all she needs is the answer to one question, "What is the secret of great leaders?" She is convinced that if Jeff will tell her, she can apply the secret in her leadership.

Over the next 18 months Jeff explains to Debbie that the secret is rooted in an attitude. He tells her that she must be willing to become a serving leader rather than a self-serving leader. The secret is that all great leaders serve.

After Debbie learns the secret she still doesn’t know what to do next. Jeff explains that great leaders serve in at least five ways. They…
  • See and shape the future
  • Engage and develop others
  • Reinvent continuously
  • Value results and relationships
  • Embody the values
The story unfolds as Debbie learns and applies each of these imperatives with her team. As a result, Debbie’s team goes from worst to first. They become the highest performing team within the company. In the end, Debbie understood that all the changes and improvements were the result of the choices she made as a leader. She realized that to SERVE is a choice. Debbie decided once and for all, she would no longer be a self-serving leader, she would be a serving leader!

Ken Blanchard is an author, speaker and business consultant. His phenomenal bestselling book, "The One Minute Manager" has sold more than ten million copies worldwide, is still on bestseller lists, has been translated into more than 25 languages and is regarded as one of the most successful business books of all time.

Coming Up With Article Ideas

Kevin Nunley, aka Dr. Nunley, writes that "One of the most powerful types of publicity--one that is often overlooked--is getting your articles printed in trade publications that cover your industry.

"The most common type of article published by trade and business publications is the application story. This story tells how a company solved a problem or addressed a need. It also usually highlights the product or service the company used to solve its problem.

"Another type of article is the "how-to" article. These are usually aimed at executives, managers, professionals, or technicians in a certain field. Editors are also interested in stories on new products, developments, or trends in their industry.

"One way to come up with an article idea is to make a list of ads you would run and the magazines in which you would run them if you had an unlimited budget. Then, write the articles based on topics related to those ads and send them into those magazines."

How to Spot Counterfeit Money

When retailers accept fake bills, they bear the entire burden of the loss. And thought it's true that counterfeiters' techniques are getting more and more complex, there are numerous things retail employees can do to detect counterfeit money.

Paul Davis, a writer who covers crime and security for newspapers, magazines and the Internet, says that if you receive a counterfeit bill, you can’t recoup your money, but the Better Business Bureau (BBB) says that businesses can claim losses due to counterfeit money as an income tax deduction.

Among the tips from the U.S. Secret Service:
  • Hold a bill up to a light and look for a holograph of the face image on the bill. Both images should match. If the $100 bill has been bleached, the hologram will display an image of Abraham Lincoln, who appears on the $5 bills, instead of Benjamin Franklin.

Using the Telephone To Market

Kevin Nunley, aka Dr. Nunley, says that telemarketing costs less than many other forms of advertising.

"A telephone call takes much less time than face-to-face selling, and is more personal than a letter. Telephone marketing also provides you with fairly close personal contact to your prospect. Telemarketing should be used in addition to other marketing techniques. It should be a continuing effort. A single phone call will usually not be enough.

"Voice training is often a good idea for whoever is doing the calling. Make sure that you talk clearly, use short sentences, and talk loud enough so that the prospect can hear you. Recent research has shown that it is a good idea to memorize a script so that your words flow more smoothly. The script must be so well memorized that you know it by heart Don't use words that feel strange. Find words and phrases that come naturally to you.

"Your telephone personality is important to consider. Notice how your friends and probably even yourself use a different voice personality when speaking on the phone. Sometimes it's subtle, but it's there. Try to eliminate your telephone personality and be as natural as possible, as though you were speaking to someone in a regular conversation.

"Be prepared to be rejected. Only 51 percent of people even listen to telemarketers. To succeed in telemarketing, you need to know what benefits a customer likes. Emphasize those benefits that have the most impact. Remember, the more people that you call, the more sales you'll close."

Optimize Your Web Site with Meta Tags, by Bob Bly

Write key-word rich meta tags for each Web page on your site. The most important meta tags are the title and description tags.

The title tag is what your visitors see at the top of their browser windows when they visit your site, as well as what they see in their bookmark lists. Failure to put strategic keywords in the title tag can result in pages being poorly ranked. The title tag can be a maximum 95 characters including spaces, but ideally no longer than 6 or 7 words.

When your web site comes up in a Google search, the description tag is what the user sees on the search engine results page (SERP). It should incorporate strategic key words and clearly communicate what you offer, who it is for, and the key benefit.

The description tag should be a maximum of 220 characters with spaces.

Your major key words should also be placed in the keywords meta tag, though Google pays less attention to the key word meta tag than to the title and description tags.

This article appears courtesy of Bob Bly Direct Response Letter.

iPhone Apps for the PR Person on the Move

Here's a good article from the "Six at Six" series from the Bulletproof blog that focuses on iPhone apps for the PR professional on the move.

"According to Facebook, more than 65 million users interact with the site through their mobile devices. The users are also 50% more active on the site, posting comments, pictures, and even video on the go. Twitter was built from the ground up to be used with mobile devices – its 140 character updates fit nicely within text message length restrictions. Meanwhile, Apple sold 42.5 million iPhones by the end of 2009. Palm’s Pre, Google’s Nexus and other Android-powered devices have joined the market already dominated by Blackberry, adding to the growing number of smart phones bringing the Web into our everyday lives.

"Communications professionals can no longer wait to get back to their desks when crisis strikes. Because more individuals now access the Internet and its social networks from their phones, crises have the potential to spread even farther and faster as situations are documented in real time on the Web. It is therefore all the more critical to keep your customers up to date as well as to mobilize brand ambassadors as events unfold."

The article highlights six iPhone apps that will transform crisis managers into certified iPhone power users. Read the complete article.

Tips for Successful Newspaper Ads, by Dr. Nunley

Newspaper ads are an excellent way to drive sales, but a bad ad can be a costly mistake. Here are some easy ways to ensure your newspaper ad pulls results.

First, it is important to mention your offer in the headline, then restate your offer in a subheading. This is the first part of the ad that a customer notices. Be sure that your ad includes a word or phrase that is set in large type, such as FREE, BUY NOW, or GUARANTEED. This helps attract the customer's attention.

Do something to differentiate yourself from others who advertise in the newspaper.

The way your ad looks is extremely important. Experiment with different ad sizes and shapes. Put a unique border around your ad, even if it is small. Also, you could try adding a color to your ad. Red, blue, and orange often work well. Remember to create a visual look that you can maintain every time you advertise. This creates an identity, and increases familiarity.

Always put the name of your company somewhere at the bottom of your ad. Don't expect that people will get the name from the copy, the headline, or the picture of the product.

If you're going to use newspapers to support your other advertising efforts, be sure you use them weekly, or stay away from them all together.

Canvassing: Selling Door-to-Door, by Dr. Nunley

Canvassing can be one of the most inexpensive marketing methods. It can even be free! Canvassing is simply asking for a customer's business. Sometimes it's called "soliciting" or "door-to-door" marketing.

The first step of canvassing is the initial meeting. Realize that first impressions do count. Make sure that you are friendly, upbeat, and honest. Try to establish a relationship with the prospective customer. Smile and look directly into the person's eye, and if possible, use the person's name. Often, it is good to begin by talking about non-business related subjects. You could talk about personal matters, weather, or a current event for a sentence or two before getting to your sales information.

The next step is the presentation. During your presentation you outline the main features of your product or service, and tell about the benefits to be gained from buying from you. How long your presentation should take depends on the price of your product or service. If you are offering to wash you prospect's car, the presentation might take less than a minute. However if you are trying to sell a home satellite system, it take might an hour or even several visits.

The last and most important step is closing. This is the moment when you complete the sale. Ask if you can write up the order. Then stay silent. Don't make a sound. Give the customer a chance to respond.
