Business Opportunites for Those Marketing to Seniors

Have a product or service that caters to seniors? Then get ready for a business explosiong. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world’s 65-and-older population is projected to triple by midcentury, from 516 million in 2009 to 1.53 billion in 2050.

Not so good news though if your market is the under 15 crowd. Census experts predict that the population under 15 is expected to increase by only 6 percent during the same period, from 1.83 billion to 1.93 billion.

In the United States, the population 65 and older will more than double by 2050, rising from 39 million today to 89 million. While children are projected to still outnumber the older population worldwide in 2050, the under 15 population in the United States is expected to fall below the older population by that date, increasing from 62 million today to 85 million.

These figures come from the world population estimates and projections released through the Census Bureau’s International Data Base. This latest update includes projections by age, including people 100 and older, for 227 countries and areas.

Product, Price, Place and Promotion -- The 4 P's

Here's a good article from a recent e-mail newsletter from Kevin Nunley, aka Dr. Nunley, on the 4 P's of marketing.

According to the good doctor, before you start marketing, there are a four things you have to know.

"They're called the 4 P's, and marketing experts around the world consider these essential points before putting any marketing concept into action.
  • Product - What is your product and how will you position it in the market? How will it be packaged? Does it have unique features and benefits? These are just a few of the questions you must ask yourself to define your product for perfect marketing placement.
  • Price - You have to decide on the amount you will charge for your product, but this task is not as easy as you might think. You must consider what your customer will pay, the price image you want to maintain consistently, what your competition charges, and much more.
  • Place - This includes position in the market, as well as how you will distribute and place your product.
  • Promotion - Now we're getting into the actual marketing of the product.Promotion includes everything from advertising to networking, newsletters to classified ads. Ask yourself which vehicles of promotion will best serve your purposes.

"Once you have used the 4 P's to define your product, price, place and promotion, you can start marketing. If your first attempt to marketing the product doesn't work the way you hoped, go back to the 4 P's and reevaluate until you find the marketing system that works for you."

As Your Mom Said... You Need a Good Night's Sleep

Entrepreneurs are known for being creative and working hard, often too hard. Now comes word of a new study that reinforces what our mom's use to tell us about getting a good night's sleep.

According to researchers, sleep is good for your memory, but the sleeping brain seems to store only the most useful information. Using data from a group of 44 college students aged 18 to 22, the study findings showed that when a good night's rest follows a period of learning, sleep can preserve the most important memories for as long as four months.

The findings are scheduled to be presented this Thursday at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting, in Seattle.

"Think of sleep as a period of memory consolidation, where the sleeping brain calculates what is most important about a memory and selects the best candidates for long-term memory, study author Jessica Payne, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, explained in a news release from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine."

So go ahead... work hard and play hard, but be sure to get enough sleep as well. Otherwise you won't be able to remember all those great ideas you came up with!

Zipcar Creates iPhone Applicaion... How About You?

Okay, this story is specifically about Zipcar and their new iPhone application, but we hope the specifics about how Zipcar created an iPhone application will spur your creativity into the possibilities of how you can use an iPhone app to market your business.

According to Springwise, the app was created through a partnership between Apple and Zipcar, the new application will allow users of Zipcar's car-sharing service to use their iPhones to find, reserve and unlock vehicles. Specifically, the application puts the iPhone's GPS to work in locating the closest Zipcars, indicating them with coloured pushpins on a map; users can then use it to reserve the vehicle they want. Once they're close to their vehicle, the technology will even beep the horn of the reserved Zipcar and unlock it.

Moreover, more than 25 percent of Zipcar members say their "life is on their iPhone," according to Zipcar CTO Luke Schneider, so tapping the brand clearly makes good sense from a practical perspective.
